Description
The Kiln House is a former malthouse and hop kilns dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The building is primarily constructed of handmade brick on a sandstone rubble base, topped with a plain tiled roof that features a parapet at the west gable end. It has six plus four bays arranged east to west, with two hop kilns located in the fourth and fifth bays from the east end. The structure has two levels and a cellar, characterized by a dentilled eaves cornice and header ventilation courses in the four westernmost bays.
The north elevation, facing the road, includes three two-light windows at ground floor level and four openings on the upper floor. There are attic lights in the gable ends, and the main entrances are located at the rear. The two hop kiln bays are topped with slate-covered pyramidal roofs that extend above the main roof. Additionally, there is a cowl and weathervane mounted on the roof ridge immediately west of the hop kilns. This large brick building is prominently positioned, serving as a significant feature of the farmstead and contributing to the setting of Lower House Farmhouse.
