Description

Lower House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1750. It is constructed of handmade brick and features a plain tiled roof with parapets at the gable ends and brick end stacks. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a chamfered plinth and a moulded eaves cornice. The facade is arranged in a 2:3:2 bay pattern, with the central three bays projecting forward and topped by a tall shaped gable. All windows have moulded architraves; the outer bays contain 12-pane sash windows with gauged flat heads on both floors, while the central part features windows with cambered heads. The outer windows on both main floors are narrow 8-pane sashes, flanking a central first-floor 12-pane sash. Above this is a similar round-headed sash in the gable, along with a central 8-panelled entrance door that also has a cambered head. There are attic lights in the gable ends.

Inside, the farmhouse retains its original oak staircase with turned balusters. The parlour features original panelling and a moulded cornice in bold relief, along with a moulded stone fireplace flanked by giant spiral pilasters on high fluted pedestals. The rest of the interior is reported to be virtually unaltered. There are rear wings at the centre and right of the building. Carved into the bricks on either side of the main entrance door are the initials "BS" and "AS," while the initials "MS" are carved on the right side of the gabled central part at about first-floor level; these initials are believed to refer to the Stafford family. The building has been inspected inside.
