Description

Nos. 2 and 4 Crown Street are two shops with living accommodation, dating from the mid-19th century. The buildings are timber framed and rough rendered, topped with a grey slate roof that is not visible from the road. They are tall, two-storey structures that are angled to follow the line of the road, with extensions at the rear.

The first floor features three vertically hung sliding sash windows with glazed margins set in moulded surrounds. There is a similar window on the ground floor to the left. The centre and right sections of the ground floor have two shop doors and windows, which include recessed panelled doors with four lights and a fanlight above; the right door is original and has reveal panels. To the right of the doors, there are plain shop windows with central glazing bars. The buildings also have fascias with moulded canopies above and pilasters at the doors and windows, which have plain bases and moulded shafts with carved capitals.

This unusual pair of buildings showcases good architectural detail and occupies a prominent corner position.
