Description

57 West Street is a house dating from around 1660, with early 19th century and mid 20th century alterations. It features a timber frame, rendered exterior, and a cement-tiled roof, which includes an original axial ridge stack made of red brick with recessed panels, an entablature, and a string course. The right gable end has been cased or rebuilt in brick. The house has a lobby entry plan and stands two storeys tall. There are three 19th century flush frame casements on the first floor and two on the ground floor, positioned on either side of the doorway leading to the lobby entry.

At the front, there is an adjoining early 19th century annexe constructed of clay bat and framed upper gable end, resting on a brick plinth and also covered with a cement-tiled roof. At the rear, there is a single-storey original stair turret that has been incorporated into a 20th century extension. The east gable end features an original oriel window with three lights, which is now blocked, supported by shaped brackets and topped with a tiled pediment.

Inside, one room on the first floor has an overmantel consisting of four round-headed arches adorned with jewel ornament, flanked by two cupboard doorways with square sunken panelling, all beneath a modillion cornice. Another ground floor room contains fragments of similar panelling. The annexe may have originally served as an early to mid 19th century shop addition, similar to those at Nos. 15 and 14 West Street.
