Description

Butchers Cottage is a cottage, originally dating to the 17th century, and subdivided in the 19th century into two dwellings. It stands on the north side of West Street, Comberton, and includes numbers 14 and 16, and number 18. The original structure is timber-framed, now rendered, with a steeply pitched slate roof and two 19th-century grey brick ridge stacks positioned internally. The gable end faces the road. The cottage has one storey and two attics. The front elevation has two windows on each level, including horizontal sliding sash windows from the 19th century, and another window in the attic. On the side elevation are two tiers of dormers, also containing horizontal sliding sash windows, one serving the upper attic and two serving the lower attic. Two doorways are present, one to number 16 now blocked. Adjoining the cottage is an early 19th-century shop addition, constructed with a framed or clay bat structure, roughcast rendering, and a slate roof. This addition features a doorway and a window. Inside the cottage, the original plan comprised three bays. Framing is now exposed in number 16, dating to the late 17th or early 18th century and featuring straight wall bracing. The roof is a through-purlin design, and there is a small 19th-century hearth.
