Description
Thistle Down Cottage is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century and was renovated in the mid-20th century. It features exposed timber framing with rendered infill and tiled roofs, including a gablet at one end. There is a ridge stack on the main range. The cottage has late 17th century red brickwork with a narrow central recess and repaired upper courses.
The layout includes an east-west hall range with a contemporary crosswing. The hall has one storey and an attic, with one mid-20th century dormer and three mid-20th century casements, one of which may be located where the original doorway was. The crosswing is two storeys high with an attic, featuring one casement in the attic and two small pane horizontal sliding sashes on each storey. The side elevation has one blocked three-light casement at the first floor and a mid-20th century porch at the doorway. The timber framing displays fairly slender scantling with straight upward and downward bracing, and staggered studwork over the braces.
