Description

King's Cottage is a mid-17th century cottage with 18th-century additions, located on Grantchester High Street. The building is timber-framed and has been plaster-rendered, with a tiled roof. An original red brick ridge stack features diagonally set shafts. The original plan was likely of a lobby-entry type, although the present mid-20th century porch is located on the left-hand end. Two storeys high, the cottage has two adjacent horizontal sliding sash windows divided by a mullion on the first floor, along with one horizontal sliding sash window. The ground floor features three windows, including one horizontal sliding sash. A single-bay addition, dating from the 18th century, is framed and tiled with a mansard roof. A small wing, likely contemporary with the addition and originally used as a shop towards the road, is framed, plaster-rendered, and has a steeply-pitched tiled roof. This wing features one casement and one horizontal sliding sash window.
