Description

No. 6 High Causeway is a house that now functions as both a residence and a shop. It primarily dates from the early 18th century, with additions and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick, featuring a painted front wall and a cement tile roof, which is adorned with an original wooden modillion eaves cornice. It has a ridge stack and is designed in an L-shape, consisting of two storeys and attics.

The front of the house displays three 18th-century flush frame hung sashes with segmental arches, set above a modern shopfront. The rear section includes four original hung sashes that have ovolo moulded glazing bars. There is also a 19th-century kitchen wing extension made of brick.

Inside, the property boasts an open-string staircase dating from around 1730 to 1740, featuring four flights with balusters shaped like diminishing columns, two for each tread, and a swept and moulded rail. The interior includes a panelled dado and raised and fielded panelling on the doors and in one first-floor rear room, which also features a late 18th-century fireplace surround with fluted pilasters and rose bosses at the corners. The ground floor room has had panelling added, and the shop area is lined with raised and fielded panelling along with a dentil cornice.
