Description
The George Hotel is an inn that originated in the late 18th century but was largely remodeled in the mid 19th century. It is constructed of local brick, with a front wall made of mid 19th century grey gault brick. The roof was raised during the mid 19th century and is now slated, though the steep pitch and tumbling can still be seen on the right-hand gable end. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a range facing the Market Place and a wing at the rear. It stands two storeys tall, featuring a symmetrical mid 19th century elevation with six recessed hung sash windows flanking a gabled central bay. This bay has a small bulls-eye window above a tripartite hung sash window. Below this, there is a central doorway with a four-centred arch, framed by a doorcase with pilasters, a cornice on plain scroll brackets, and topped with ball finials. The rear range, dating from the late 18th century, is also made of brick and has a steeply pitched roof.
