Description
No. 8 Market Place is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations around 1840 and 1900. It is constructed of rubblestone, with rendered end walls and some dressed stone. The roof is steeply pitched, covered with Collyweston stone slates, and features end parapets on kneelers made of moulded stone. There is a wooden eaves cornice and dressed stone end stacks that are square and have an entablature, dating from the late 17th century.
The building has two storeys and an attic, with three gabled dormers that each contain possibly original leaded light casements. The three, three-light casements and one single light window have ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds, while the ground floor windows have renewed stone surrounds. The doorway features an early 19th-century pedimented doorcase with reeded engaged columns and a plain entablature, leading to a six-panelled door with two flush and four raised and fielded panels, along with a fanlight that has glazing bars. There are 19th-century cast iron railings at the front.
At the rear, there is a single-storey range built around 1840, made of brick with a cement-tiled roof and some original casements in pointed arches. A wing was added around 1900, running parallel to the mid-17th-century front range, constructed of stone with a mainly slate roof, except for the gable end which is covered with Collyweston stone slates.
Inside, the original dining room and parlour are both panelled. The parlour was remodelled around 1900 when the hearth was removed and a window to the street was blocked. The intact panelling features two heights with the panels divided by fluted pilasters. Additionally, a first-floor room is also panelled and has an original bolection moulded fireplace surround.
