Description

No. 8 Gracious Street is a house built in 1731, with some alterations made around 1760. It features wire-cut yellow brick in English bond with red brick details. The steeply pitched roof is now covered with slates and has tumbled gable end parapets. The house is designed in an L-plan and has two storeys.

The front has a range of five cambered red brick arches for the original window openings, which now contain later hung sashes. There are original segmental red brick arches above four enlarged window openings at the ground floor, located on either side of a central doorway. The early 19th-century doorcase is reeded and features a low-pitched gabled canopy supported by plain scroll brackets. The door itself has six raised and fielded panels, with two glazed upper panels.

Inside, the front range includes opposing front and rear doorways, with a parlour and dining room on either side. The hall contains an open string staircase from around 1760, which has two diminishing columns as balusters for each tread, square newels, a moulded rail, and scroll tread ends. The staircase dado is adorned with raised and fielded panelling. The left-hand ground floor room features similar panelling in the dado and a fluted fireplace surround with decorative boss enrichments at the corners.
