Description
56 High Causeway is a cottage that dates from the late 17th century, with later additions from the 19th century and a renovation in 1984. The building is timber framed with wattle and daub infill on a brick base, and its 19th-century plaster-rendered walls are designed to imitate stone ashlar. It features a steeply pitched reed thatched roof with a ridge stack. The cottage has a three-bay, lobby entry plan with the gable end facing the road. It is one storey with an attic. The gable end includes a 20th-century flush frame hung sash window with small panes, situated above an early 19th-century canted bay window that was renewed in 1984. There is a doorway in the side wall leading to the lobby.
Adjoining the main structure are 19th-century additions from various periods, including a kitchen made of brick, rubblestone, and timber framing, also with a reed thatch roof. Inside, one of the original hearths has been removed to accommodate an early 19th-century staircase, which features an open-string design with square section balusters, a mahogany rail, and scroll tread ends. There is a marble fireplace surround that may indicate an inglenook in the room facing the road. The main posts have straight upward bracing to the wall plates, and there is original shelving in the 19th-century pantry.
