Description
No. 16 Gracious Street is a cottage built in 1764, as indicated by a dated stone, with extensions made in the 19th century. The building features gault brick in English bond on the front wall, which is rendered, and has a steeply pitched reed thatch roof. The gable ends have tumbled parapets supported by kneelers, and the end stacks have been rebuilt. The cottage is designed in an L-plan and consists of one storey with an attic, featuring two dormers. There are two 20th-century canted bay windows on either side of the original doorway, which now has a 20th-century door. The date 1764 is displayed on a stone panel at the gable end. The kitchen was extended in the 19th century, and the roof was raised during this time. The front door, which is a six raised and fielded panelled design, has been reset to the rear of the building. Inside, there is an early 19th-century open-string staircase with square section balusters and scroll tread ends. The first floor features vertical panelling with raised panels on the partition walls, and there is an early 19th-century white marble fireplace located on the ground floor.
