Description

This is an early 18th-century house with later 18th-century additions to the rear. The front and rear walls are timber-framed and plaster-rendered, with contemporary tumbled brick gabled ends which are now painted. The roof is thatched, and there are end stacks. The house comprises a front range and a kitchen wing at the rear, forming an L-shaped plan, with a stair turret located in the angle. It is two storeys high. The front has original architraves to the two- and three-light casement windows. A central doorway features an original doorcase with a pulvinated frieze and a flat canopy with a panelled soffit. The door itself consists of six raised and fielded panels, with two small glazed upper panels. The kitchen wing is of painted brick with a steeply pitched thatched roof, and further additions have been made to the rear of the main range; one may have had its lean-to roof raised. A mid-19th century wash-house and stable range, built of gault brick, are located within the curtilage of the house. The interior includes exposed timber framing and a staircase with a square newel post and turned balusters. The first floor retains vertical raised and fielded panelling, which is also found at numbers 2 and 3 The Bower, and number 11 Claygate, Whittlesey.
