Description

Great Oaks Farmhouse is an 18th century house that was extended in the 19th century. It is built of coursed limestone rubble and has an old clay tile roof. The original house consists of three bays, and in the 19th century, two additional bays were added to the northwest, creating an L-shaped plan with the roof hipped around the southwest corner. A gabled wing was also added at the angle of the L.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics. The south entrance front features two hipped dormers, each with 2-light casements that have glazing bars. On the first floor, there are three 2-light casements with glazing bars under timber lintels. The ground floor has four casements with glazing bars, with two on either side of a central door. The doors are set in panelled reveals and topped with a pedimented canopy supported by slim Ionic columns.

The west elevation of the return wing also consists of three bays. It has a central, slightly projecting gabled section with a small attic casement window. The first floor features three 2-light casement windows with glazing bars arranged in a 1:1:1 pattern, with the right-hand window in the original house located under a timber lintel. The ground floor has a central 2-light casement flanked by French doors, with the right-hand door also opening under a timber lintel.
