Description
Kencot House is a house dating back to the early 18th century, with significant remodelling and extensions during the early to mid-19th century. Constructed of coursed rubble limestone, the front facade is roughcast with ashlar quoins and window dressings, and features coved plaster eaves. The roof is covered in stone slate, with ashlar ridge chimneys that have moulded cornices. The house is two storeys and an attic, with seven bays, the left bay likely an early-19th century addition. The windows, all from the early to mid-19th century, are set in raised stone surrounds with beaded edges, depressed arches, and keyblocks. The lower windows are two-pane sashes, while the upper windows have been altered to wooden cross casements. Three gabled roof dormers contain small boxed sashes. The sixth bay houses an early to mid-19th century four-panelled door, topped with an ornamental semi-circular fanlight, all within a contemporary stone doorcase featuring an open pediment on Doric columns. A small single-storey extension is attached to the right end. The rear of the house has been extensively extended in the 19th century, creating a triple-depth plan. The right side incorporates gabled outer bays and a smaller gabled projection in the centre. Centre and right bays have two-storey bay windows with Gothic glazing; the right bay is topped with a battlemented parapet. The interior was remodelled in the early to mid-19th century, featuring a central circular stairwell with delicately reeded arched doorways and niches, and a staircase with stick balusters.
