Description
9 and 10 Parkes Passage are a pair of cottages built around 1780, with a rear extension added in the mid-19th century for the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Company. The cottages are constructed of painted brick and feature a slate roof with dentil brick eaves, along with brick stacks at the gable ends and at the rear.
The cottages have a three-bay front range and are two stories tall, with cellars beneath each cottage. The symmetrical south front has three windows and mid-20th century leaded casements that replace the originals. The front doors are framed by original corniced architraves.
Inside, the cottages have mirror-image plans, with the central room on the ground floor belonging to No. 10 and the first floor room belonging to No. 9. The interiors include late 18th and 19th century panelled doors and fireplaces, with a bressummer over the open fireplace in the principal room of No. 10. There are boxed elm winder stairs and fragments of late 18th century wallpaper on the boards in No. 10.
A late 18th century brick wall extends south along the west side of the garden and the east side of Parkes Passage. These cottages were originally built to collect tolls for the canal company and served as the residence for the lock keeper. Stourport grew rapidly as an inland canal port after the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Company chose this site as its trans-shipment port and terminus on the River Severn. This building is directly connected to the canal and reflects the significance of late Georgian architecture during the town's development and the Industrial Revolution.
