Description

NUMBER 2 AND 2A AND BALDWIN CHAMBERS is a mid-18th century house, later converted into two shops and offices. The building has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century and in the late 20th century. It is constructed of brick and has a hipped tile roof. The house is four storeys high and features a dentilled brick cornice. The front facade has three windows; the first and second floors contain 16-pane sashes, while the central sash on the lower floor has been replaced with plate glass. The second-floor windows mirror the first floor. The third floor has a 2-light casement to the left, a 9-pane sash in the centre, and a blind sash to the right, all with rubbed brick heads. The ground floor has shop fronts, with pilasters and a blind box across the whole façade. A recessed central entrance leads to Baldwin Chambers, accessed by two steps, with angled entrances to the shops themselves, all featuring half-glazed doors. Inside, there is an open well staircase with a moulded handrail and stick balusters.
