Description
No 1 Load Street, which also includes No 1 Severn Side South, is a house that has been converted into shops and a restaurant. It dates from the early 18th century, with mid-19th century and some late 20th century alterations. The building is constructed of brick and features a hipped tile roof. It stands four storeys tall and has an elaborately moulded brick cornice.
The front has three windows, which are plate glass boxed sashes with segmental heads; some of these are located on the second floor, while the third floor has shorter windows, with the central window being blind. The ground floor features a bowed shop front with pilasters and a dentilled cornice, a central entrance with a two-leaf half-glazed door, and a three-pane shop window on each side.
On the Severn Side South front, the building also has four storeys and a moulded string course at the first and second floors. There are four windows: two canted oriels on the left (which were formerly sashes with segmental heads) and two blind windows with segmental heads on the right. The second floor has a wooden cross-window on the left, a three-light casement, and two boxed plate glass sashes on the right, all with segmental heads. The third floor features a two-light casement on the left, followed by a three-light casement and two blocked windows on the right.
The ground floor has three windows: two 2-light 20th century casements on the left and a three-light 20th century casement to the right of these, with an entrance between them that has a wooden architrave and a half-glazed door. To the right of the three-light casement, there is another entrance leading to the restaurant, and at the right-hand corner, a former shop window has been blocked, featuring an inset moulded wooden architrave and a four-panelled door.
Inside, the staircase leading to the restaurant is an open well staircase with a ramped and moulded handrail, turned balusters, and a closed string.
