Description
The Hermitage is a building located in Upper Kemerton, likely dating from the late 17th century, with an extension added around 1800 and some alterations made in the late 20th century. Originally a row of three or four houses, it has now been converted into a single dwelling. The structure is built from coursed limestone rubble and features a thatched roof, which is half-hipped at the west end. There is a brick ridge stack and a late 20th-century rubble stack to the south of the ridge.
The building has five bays aligned east to west, with the two eastern bays and the western bay being additions from around 1800. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers. The south front elevation has mostly late 20th-century casement windows, including two 2-light windows, two rectangular lights, and a 3-light casement from the 19th century on the ground floor. There are also five eyebrow dormers, two with 2-light windows, two with 3-light windows, and one with a single-light window from the 19th century. One ground floor window has been replaced with a pair of late 20th-century glazed doors.
The main entrance is currently located at the east gable end and features a flat canopy supported by brackets and a late 20th-century stable door. Above the entrance, the attic window is a 2-light chamfered mullioned window with a hoodmould that has returns. The north elevation facing the road includes a central 2-light casement with an eyebrow dormer and another 2-light casement above. The interior is reported to contain some internal timber-framing.
