Description

Grange Cottage is a house dating from around 1500, with early 17th century, mid-19th century, and mid-20th century alterations. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill on a limestone rubble base, featuring rendered brick and rubble replacement walling and refacing. The cottage has a thatched roof with brick ridge end stacks. Originally, it was a cruck hall house with two framed bays aligned north to south, and chimneys were likely inserted internally at each end in the 17th century, with some parts having been partially rebuilt. The building is single storey with an attic that includes a dormer.

The framing consists of two rows of panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate. The former cruck at the north end has been altered and reconstructed as a collar and tie-beam truss in the 17th century, while the south end has been entirely rebuilt in brick. On the east front elevation, all windows are 20th century casements, including two 3-light windows on the ground floor and an eyebrow dormer with a pair of 2-light windows. The main entrance, located to the right of centre, features a porch with a flat canopy supported by timber posts and a 20th century half-glazed door. There is also an attic light at the north gable end.

Inside, the central cruck truss remains, although the lower section of the eastern blade is missing. The northern bay has a 17th century inserted ceiling and a large fireplace that was blocked in the 19th century. The open hearth was likely situated in the upper southern bay, which has a ceiling dating from the 19th century. The east window in the south bay appears to have originally been of a similar size, as part of the former frame is still visible.
