Description

Thackstone Cottage is a house dating from the mid- to late 17th century, with substantial rebuilding in the late 18th century following a fire. Later 20th-century alterations and an extension have also been made. The house is constructed of coursed squared limestone, with bands of ironstone, and has a thatched roof. Brick end and ridge stacks are present. The building comprises three distinct sections. It is two storeys high with an attic, and has a four-window front. A 20th-century door, protected by a thatched hood and a wooden lintel, is located to the left of centre. The ground and first floors feature two-light casement windows, each with a wooden lintel, with the exception of a small window positioned to the right of centre. Quoins are visible, and a stone-coped gable is present on the left-hand side. A two-storey brick extension adjoins the right-hand end. The gable end facing the street presents a refined composition, featuring pair of two-light stone-mullioned cellar windows, a chamfered plinth, and three-light stone mullion windows with stepped hood moulds to the ground and first floors. A similar two-light stone mullion window is found in the attic, also with a hood mould. The gable end features a stone cope and kneelers. Inside, stop-chamfered spine beams are visible, alongside an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer above.
