Description

Nos 40 and 42, High Street

Two cottages dating from the late 17th century, altered in the 20th century. They are constructed of coursed squared limestone. No 40 has a thatched roof, while No 42 has a 20th-century ridged tile roof. Both have brick ridge and end stacks.

The buildings follow a two-unit plan and rise to two storeys with a three-window range across the front.

No 40 features a 20th-century four-light casement window to the left, a small one-light window to the right of centre, and a 20th-century casement to the right, all with wood lintels. The first-floor windows are three-light casements set within eyebrow dormers. A 20th-century porch is positioned at the right end.

No 42 has a pair of small one-light windows to the left and right of centre on the ground floor, with two-light casement windows to the left and right, also with wood lintels. The entrance is at the rear, and a dormer window is positioned to the right of centre.

Internally, No 40 contains an ogee-stop-chamfered spine beam and an open fireplace with a stop-chamfered cambered bressumer.
