Description
Keeper's Cottage is a cottage with probable origins in the 15th century, rebuilt in the 17th century and altered in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a timber frame with brick and rendered wattle-and-daub infill, as well as brick replacement walling and plain tiled roofs. The main brick ridge stack has oversailing cap courses, and there is also an external brick stack on the right side. The building has a hall and cross-wing type plan, with the hall consisting of three framed bays and a stack likely inserted in a former through-passage, leaving a lobby entrance at the rear. The cross-wing to the east has two framed bays. The framing includes three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, short straight braces in the upper corners, and collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts and a V-strut in the apex.
The front elevation has irregular fenestration; the main part includes a 2-light and a 3-light casement with cambered heads, and a gabled dormer with a 2-light casement. The main entrance, located to the right of the chimney, features a doorcase with an open pediment and pilasters, along with a ledged and battened door. The cross-wing gable end has a ground floor 2-light casement and an attic light, and is weatherboarded in the gable apex. Inside, there are intermediate collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts, and the cross frame east of the main chimney retains remains of the blades of full cruck trusses.
