Description

Rattonby House and Blundells is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered infill, plain tiled roofs, and a large brick chimney on the main ridge that has four star-shaped stacks and a rebuilt combined cap, along with a ridge stack at the east end. The building has a U-shaped plan, with the main range oriented east to west, consisting of three framed bays and a lobby entry created by the chimney in the west end bay. There is a cross-wing of three framed bays at the west gable end and a single bay addition at the rear of the east end bay. The house is partly two storeys and partly single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

The framing is irregular, mainly comprising three to four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short, straight braces in the upper corners. It has collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts; the left gable end features three collars, while the large gabled dormer in the left front bay has two collars. The west end cross-wing front gable end has a single collar and a V-strut in the apex.

On the front elevation, there is scattered fenestration. The main range includes a ground floor 2-light casement and paired 2- and 3-light casements. The large gabled dormer on the left end has a 3-light casement, and above the central bay is a small gabled dormer with a 2-light casement. The right end bay contains a ledged and battened door. In the cross-wing gable end, there is a ground floor 3-light casement and a first floor 2-light casement. The left gable end facing Worcester Road features a ground floor 3-light casement and an attic light. The adjoining single bay to the left appears to have had its roof raised in the mid-19th century, adding an extra row of panels, and includes an early 19th-century multi-paned canted oriel window with moulded architraves, a first floor 3-light casement, and a part-glazed door with a flat canopy supported by shaped brackets. The interior has not been inspected.
