Description

The Venture Inn is a house that has been converted into a restaurant. It dates back to the 16th century, with early 19th century and mid-20th century alterations. The building is timber-framed, with some replacement timbers, rendered and painted brick infill, and some dressed sandstone walling. It has a plain tiled roof and brick stacks at the rear and right side. The structure consists of a single framed bay with a three-bay cross-wing at the right gable end, and it stands two storeys tall.

The main part of the building originally featured three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners. When the roof was raised in the 19th century, two additional rows of small panels were added. The cross-wing has two rows of two panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces across the lower corners of the first floor, and it slightly jetties at the front gable end. This section has a double-collar-and-tie-beam truss with queen struts and a V-strut in the apex.

On the front elevation, the main part has a three-light window on each floor. The cross-wing gable end features two early 19th century multi-paned bay windows beneath the jetty, paired two-light casements on the first floor, and is flanked by timber posts supporting the jetty. The former 19th century entrance has a four-panelled door. The current main entrance is located in the right side elevation and includes a 20th century gabled timber porch. Inside, there are stop-chamfered main beams. There are also 20th century additions at the rear, and a Norwich Union fire insurance mark is visible on the front gable.
