Description

The Old School House is a building that was originally a school and is now used as garage offices. It dates back to the early 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The structure is made of handmade brick in a random bond, with the front elevation whitened. It features a plain tiled roof with overhanging eaves, hipped at the return to Church Lane. There is a large external brick stack with offsets on the rear right and a smaller brick stack on the left side. The building has an L-shaped plan, is two storeys high with an attic that includes dormers, and has a brick plinth, a 2-course band between the storeys, and a moulded eaves cornice.

On the front elevation, the main entrance is located to the right of the centre and features a moulded flat canopy supported by consoles, a 6-panelled door, and a transom light with a central glazing bar. There are three windows on each floor, which are 2- and 3-light casements set under gauged flat heads with projecting keyblocks. To the left of centre on the first floor, there is a blind window. The building also has two gabled dormers with 2-light casements. The gable end facing west towards Church Lane has a shaped gable with a ball finial, designed to face the church in its earlier position.

Although the interior was not inspected, the building has historical significance as a former charity school. An inscription on the blind first floor window of the front elevation reads: "This Charity School House/ founded by Richard Lloyd/ of Comhampton in this/ Parish Yeoman/ 1729/ For the instructing such/ children of this Parish in Reading/ English Writing and Arithmetic/ only whose Parents are not assessed/ at above Five Pounds a Year." This inscription refers to the funds and lands bequeathed by Richard Lloyd in his will to establish an Educational Trust responsible for founding a school in Ombersley Village and at Sytchampton.
