Description
The Crown and Sandys Hotel is a public house that was rebuilt in the late 17th century, likely from a structure dating back to the 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The building features a timber frame that has been refaced with painted brick, and it has slate and plain tiled roofs behind a high parapet with raised panels resembling shaped gables. There are large brick stacks on the ridges and at the rear. The hotel has two storeys and a cellar, with a cogged eaves cornice and a layout of four plus two bays.
On the front elevation, the left four-bay section has a lobby-entry plan with regular window placement. The windows feature gauged flat heads, moulded architraves, and 16-pane sashes. The first-floor window in the second bay is blocked, and below it is a doorway with an open pediment, fluted pilasters, and a six-panelled door that has four raised panels and a blind segmental fanlight. The taller two-bay section on the right has shaped parapet panels with embrasures and an additional cogged course at the base of each. The windows here are mostly 16-pane sashes with gauged flat heads and moulded architraves, except for the first-floor window in the left bay, which is a 12-pane sash. The main entrance below has a moulded flat canopy, fret-moulded pilasters, a 20th-century panelled door, and a barred transom light.
The right side elevation features a small central bay window that projects almost two storeys high between the ground and first-floor windows. This bay has a parapet, a shaped gable above with a blind loophole, a cogged eaves course, and a blind mullion and transom window.
The interior has been much altered, and there are mid-19th century additions at the rear.
