Description
Burnworthy Lodge is a cottage dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and mid-20th centuries. The building features a cob façade with whitewashed random rubble and a thatched roof that is hipped to the left. A brick stack rises from the eaves, while a stone stack with a rendered cap is located at the right gable end. The layout suggests it may have originally had a gable entry with a two-cell plan, but it is now accessed through a porch on the east front.
The west front has one and a half storeys, showcasing a gabled two-light casement window that rises from the eaves on the right, adorned with an applied half-timbered gable. On the ground floor, there are two 19th-century three-light casement windows under wooden lintels. There is evidence of rebuilding on both the left and right returns, with the left side featuring a blocked opening beside the stack. The rear elevation has an entrance accessed via a lean-to porch with a plank door.
Inside, the cottage contains three pairs of jointed cruck trusses set in from the gable ends, and a timber-framed partition that rises to the full height of the building. The ground floor includes two panels with a semi-circular headed doorframe that is chamfered on one side. A lateral beam at the kitchen end is set to one side of the stud, and there are remains of a chamfered bressumer over the fireplace. A curved bay on the left now has an inserted light and was formerly the site of winder stairs, which now rise against the rear wall. The alterations to the gable ends complicate the understanding of the building's evolution.
