Description
This is a 17th-century barn located about 10 yards north-east of Commandery Farmhouse. It is timber-framed and sits on a plinth made of lias limestone rubble, with weatherboarding and a corrugated iron roof. The barn consists of five framed bays arranged in an east/west direction. The central wagon bay features opposed cart entries with double doors. The south elevation, which faces the farmyard, includes a stable door and a 2-light casement window to the left of the wagon bay, along with a door to the right of the wagon bay at the east end.
Inside, the barn has framing consisting of four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with large swept braces in the lower corners. The roof is constructed with two tiers of trenched purlins, straight wind-braces, and tie-beam trusses that have two collars and vertical struts at the gable ends. The intermediate trusses feature an upper collar and two raking struts supporting the lower tier of purlins.
