Description
Tappenhall Farm is a farmhouse that dates back to the 17th century or earlier, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building features part timber framing with painted brick infill, brick replacement walling, and brick additions set on a sandstone rubble plinth. It has a plain tiled roof, a large external brick chimney stack at the rear, and a smaller brick stack at the north gable end. The structure consists of three framed bays, with a likely through-passage above the north end bay. It is a single-storey building with an attic that includes dormers and a large cellar at the south end, due to the steeply sloping ground.
The framing mainly consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners. The tie-beam and collar of the north gable end truss are partly visible.
On the front elevation, the fenestration is scattered. The ground floor features two three-light casements with cambered heads and two rectangular lights. There is a gabled dormer with a two-light casement, and the doorway, located in the former through-passage position, has a pilaster and entablature surround with a flat, moulded canopy, leading to a ledged and battened door.
The interior has not been inspected, but the main beams are chamfered with ogee stops. At the rear, the south bay includes a mid-19th century single-storey kitchen wing that once housed a boiler and a large bread oven, which has since been removed. There is also an outshut and a mid-20th century extension to the rear centre and north bay.
