Description
Mildenham Bridge is a lock tail bridge built around 1771 by James Brindley. It is constructed from handmade brick in English bond with sandstone dressings, along with some mid-20th century brick repairs. The bridge features an elliptical arch that is approximately 14 feet wide at the base, with a sandstone course above the arch on both sides. The curved parapet is splayed at the ends and has repaired sandstone copings, while the lower parapet is reinforced with an upright metal tie-bar. The Droitwich Barge Canal, which the bridge spans, is a broad gauge canal that connects Droitwich with the River Severn. James Brindley served as the consultant engineer for the canal's construction, which was completed in 1771 to support the salt industry using specially designed "wich" barges. At the time of the survey in September 1984, the bridge was undergoing restoration by the Droitwich Canals Trust. The bridge is part of a group with Mildenham Lock located immediately to the east.
