Description

Mildenham Lock No. 6 is a canal lock dating to circa 1771, designed by James Brindley. It forms part of the Droitwich Barge Canal, a broad gauge canal connecting Droitwich with the River Severn and built to support the salt trade. The canal was constructed in 1771, with Brindley acting as consultant engineer. The lock itself measures 71 feet 6 inches long by 14 feet 6 inches wide, and features double gates at both ends; the east end gates were replaced in 1975. The lock’s structure is largely hand-made brick with some repairs using machine-made bricks, incorporating bullnosed blue brick quoins, and sandstone copings. The lock is part of a group with Mildenham Bridge, located immediately to the west. It was undergoing restoration by the Droitwich Canals Trust in 1984.
