Description
Hawford Dovecote is a 16th-century dovecote that was restored in the late 20th century. It features a timber frame with rendered infill sitting on a sandstone rubble plinth, topped by a cross-gabled plain tiled roof with a gabled lantern. The building has a square plan.
The framing includes close-set vertical studding, with three rows to the tie-beam and two rows in each gable, supported by long straight braces in the lower corners. The north elevation has double doors, while the east elevation features a window with two wooden mullions and three iron bars, along with a blocked opening above it. There is also a blocked opening in the west elevation, and small attic lights in each gable with a single wooden mullion.
Inside, there is a blue brick floor, and approximately 150 nesting boxes remain on the west wall, with around 60 on the north wall. The National Trust purchased and restored the dovecote in 1978.
