Description

Kings Hawford School is a house, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with later 19th-century alterations and additions. It is now used as a private school. The house is constructed of painted brick with a hipped slate roof concealed behind a front parapet, and large brick stacks to the rear wings. It has three storeys and a cellar. A moulded cornice runs beneath the front parapet. The sides feature a band between the lower storeys and dentilled eaves cornices. The five-bay front has windows with stone sills, gauged flat heads with large keyblocks that are dropped slightly, and moulded architraves. The ground floor windows are 15-pane full-length sashes, the first-floor windows are glazing bar sashes, and the second-floor windows are four-pane sashes. The central entrance has a doorcase with an open pediment on consoles, panelled reveals, a part-glazed door, and a traceried fanlight. The interior has been significantly altered, although the entrance hall retains an open well staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. A two-storey, single-bay extension has been added to the left side, along with single and two-storey rear extensions.
