Description
Linacre Bridge is a canal accommodation bridge built around 1771 by James Brindley. It is constructed from handmade brick in English bond with sandstone dressings. The bridge features an elliptical arch approximately 14 feet wide at the base, with a sandstone course above the arch and sandstone quoins at the base, which have rope grooves on the west side. The curved parapet is splayed at the ends and has sandstone copings. The towpath runs beneath the west side of the bridge. The Droitwich Barge Canal, which this bridge serves, is a broad gauge canal that connects Droitwich with the River Severn. James Brindley was the consulting engineer throughout the canal's construction, which was completed in 1771 to support the salt industry using specially developed "wich" barges. As of September 1984, the Droitwich Canals Trust was restoring the canal, and Linacre Bridge is noted as the only structure on the canal that has remained untouched since its completion.
