Description

Old Downton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and around 1930. The building features a combination of timber framing with brick infill on a rubble base, as well as sections constructed entirely of brick. It has a hipped slate roof with brick ridge stacks. The layout is L-shaped, with wings extending to the north and west, and a large external rubble chimney with tiled offsets and a brick stack on the east side. The main south elevation was refronted around 1930.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a basement and attic that includes half-dormers. The timber framing is visible at the rear, showcasing four rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners. The main south front has three bays, with the left bay projecting slightly and a pilaster buttress located between the central and right bays. The right bay features a basement 3-light casement window, while the ground floor includes a bay window with a lean-to roof and a 12-pane sash window, as well as a 6-pane sash and a 3-light and 2-light casement on the first floor. A central gabled half-dormer contains a 2-light casement. The central entrance is marked by a moulded flat canopy supported on brackets above a half-glazed door.

At the rear, there is a 19th-century wing that adjoins the west side of the north wing. Inside, one room is lined with 17th-century panelling and another with early 18th-century panelling. The 17th-century staircase has survived, featuring moulded strings and square newels, although the balusters have been removed.
