Description
Garmsley is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame with rendered infill, brick replacement walling, some rubble walling with brick dressings, and plain tiled roofs with brick stacks. It consists of three framed bays aligned east to west, with the central bay primarily occupied by a large chimney that forms a lobby entrance. The structure is single storey with a cellar and attic, which includes dormers.
The framing at the west end has one row of panels at eaves level and a collar and tie-beam truss with four struts to the lower collar, two struts to the upper collar, and a swept V-strut at the apex. On the south front elevation, there are two 2-light 20th-century casement windows and a 19th-century four-pane sash window, all featuring cambered heads on the ground floor. The elevation also includes three raking-top 20th-century dormers with 2-light casements and a central entrance that has a 20th-century flat-roofed brick porch with a half-glazed door. A large rubble wing extends to the northeast.
Inside, the room on the ground floor to the west has two moulded ceiling beams with run-out stops and chamfered ceiling beams in the room to the east that divide the ceiling into small compartments. There are large back-to-back fireplaces, with the eastern one retaining its 19th-century range.
