Description

Netherwood is a building dating from the 17th century that was refronted in brick in 1780. It features a cornice, a pediment, and stands three storeys tall with three three-light casement windows that have segmental heads, along with a central door. The top windows are lunettes. There is an early timber frame west wing that incorporates re-used materials, likely from an earlier stone house on the same site. Netherwood is said to be the birthplace of the Earl of Essex, who was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. The building, along with the stable range, barn, and dovecote, forms a cohesive group.
