Description

No. 17 Bath Road is a house that has been converted into a surgery. It was built around 1800 to 1820 and has undergone some later additions and alterations, including a lean-to structure added at the back around the 1960s. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped slate roof with four tall brick stacks at either end. The stacks on the right have oversailing courses and pots, while the left ones are shared with No. 15.

The house has a double depth plan with a central hallway. The outer windows are 8/8 sashes, and there is a central first-floor 6/6 sash, all set in plain reveals with sills. The central entrance features a five-panel door, where the lower panels are flush beaded and the upper panels are raised and fielded. It also includes a fanlight with radial glazing bars, panelled reveals, and a fluted architrave. The rear of the building has 8/8 and 6/6 sash windows.

Inside, the property retains original joinery and plasterwork, including simple fluted cornices, panelled shutters, an open well staircase with carved tread ends and stick balusters, a run-out mahogany handrail, and a lion's-paw foot. The house is part of a group with Nos. 6, 10, 16, 18, and Nos. 11-23 (odd) Bath Road, as well as Nos. 117 and 119 Sidbury.
