Description
No. 1 St Johns is a terraced house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It was built around 1720 to 1740 and has undergone later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof with dentilled eaves that are painted. It has a single-depth plan with a central entrance hall and a rear staircase projection. There is a service range at a right angle to the rear on the right side, and a 20th-century range similarly arranged to the rear left. The building stands three storeys high and has five first-floor windows. The upper-floor windows are arranged in a 3/3 pattern, while the first-floor windows are 6/6, all with near-flush frames under flat gauged-brick arches and painted stucco sills. The ground floor has two early to mid-20th-century shopfronts, with the left one being significantly altered around 1991. There are individual entrances on the left and right sides, as well as a central entrance to the upper floors featuring part-glazed doors from the 20th century.
Inside, very little of the original structure remains, but some door architraves and a fine staircase leading to the first floor and above with 'barley-sugar' balusters can still be seen.
Historically, marks on the brickwork above the central entrance indicate where a pediment was once fixed, positioned high above the current door and overlight. It is also evident that four ground-floor windows, aligned with those above, have been infilled. The interior layout suggests that the ground floor has been lowered due to the removal of a semi-basement. An 1886 Ordnance Survey map shows an external flight of steps leading to the entrance.
