Description
The buildings at 3 and 5 Bull Ring are a pair of terraced houses, now used as offices on the left and a doctor's surgery on the right. They were built around 1800 and have undergone later additions and alterations. The front of the buildings is red brick, with a straight joint marking the boundary with the adjacent property at number 1 (listed separately). Stone sills and stucco detailing are also present. The front and return roof slopes are slate, while the rest of the roof is covered in plain clay tiles, with a hipped roof section to the right. Brick ridge stacks are located at each end and along the party wall, featuring overhanging courses and terracotta pots.
The building has a double-depth plan, with entrances to the right and centre of the front. It is three storeys high, with a basement. The façade features six windows on the first floor (arranged as 2 windows on the left and 4 on the right). Stucco detailing includes a plinth to the left and a doorcase to the right. Brick detailing is notable for its dentilled eaves and the decorative surround to the right doorcase, constructed in off-white brick. A canted bay window with 2/2 sash windows is present on the ground floor to the left; a later, full-height canted bay window with a hipped roof, featuring 1/1/2/2/1/1 sash windows on each floor, is located to the far right. Other windows are 3/3 sashes on the second floor and 6/6 sashes elsewhere, all set in plain reveals with stone sills and flat, gauged brick arches. Two ground-floor windows in the centre have moulded architraves.
Two steps lead to the left entrance, which is flanked by a replaced three-panel door with a flush-beaded bottom panel and ovolo-moulded upper panels, an overlight, and panelled pilasters with console brackets supporting the pediment, which has a panelled soffit. A roll-edged stone step leads to the right entrance, which features a four-panel bolection-moulded door, a plain fanlight, and an arched doorcase with a capped vermiculated keystone.
The interior of number 3 retains polychromatic ceramic tiles to the hall floor, a simple staircase with stick balusters, panelled doors (mostly four-panel, with one two-panel door), architraves, and skirtings. A cornice is present in the front first-floor room, and there are two cast-iron fireplaces with wooden surrounds. Brick steps lead down to a brick-paved cellar. The interior of number 5 has not been inspected.
Historical records, including the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1886, show the façade bays as they currently appear.
