Description
No. 6 St Johns is a house that represents the surviving cross-wing of a large medieval hall-house, originally built around 1550, with later additions and alterations. It underwent a comprehensive repair and restoration by architect Michael Peach around 1979. The building features a timber frame set on a high brick plinth and is topped with a handmade plain clay tile roof.
The house has a two-bay plan with its gable end facing the street. The original access was through the west wall from the screens passage. It stands two storeys high with a shallow semi-basement and has a single window on the first floor. Notable timber frame details include a jettied front elevation with close studding and jowled corner posts, a collar roof with a pair of clasped purlins, and some early wattle and daub infill still in place. Much of the front elevation has been renewed, although the jowel posts on the first floor are original. There are replica mullion windows on each floor based on remaining evidence in the framing. A vertically boarded door is located to the right in a new opening, with access provided by a flight of external steps.
Inside, a significant amount of the framing has been replaced, but the west wall remains largely intact, including the paired doorways on the ground floor that were formerly part of the screens passage. The internal staircase is a softwood structure from the late 20th century, added during the repair scheme.
Historically, No. 6 is believed to be a remnant of a Tudor merchant's house, with the eastern range serving as the service wing that contained the buttery and pantry. Survey drawings created by Michael Peach are part of a Listed Building Consent application held by Worcester City Council. The building was listed in May 1978, prior to the removal of an early 19th-century brick front and a late 19th-century shopfront.
