Description
No. 3 and 3A on St Johns is a former terraced house built in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with stucco sills and features a plain clay tile roof. It has a single-depth plan with the entrance located to the right and a service range at the rear left. The facade is asymmetric and consists of two storeys and an attic. There are five first-floor windows with 6/6 near-flush frames, each with sills and flat gauged brick arches. The building also has three dormers that feature paired 6-pane side-hung casements and hipped roofs. On the far right, there is a roll-edged stone step leading to a 6-panel door with flush beading, an extended fanlight with gothic style tracery, plain pilasters, and an open pediment, which provides access to a through-passage leading to the rear of the properties. To the left, there is a mid-20th century bank facade with a central door.
Inside, some original features remain, including panelled doors (both 4 and 2-panel), architraves, and skirtings on the upper floors, as well as some wide elm floorboards and a plain 19th-century staircase.
