Description
55 and 57 High Street are a pair of houses dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. They are timber-framed with painted brick infill and refacing, and feature a machine-tiled roof. The houses are likely arranged in four framed bays running north to south, with a large external chimney located at the rear center, which has been partly rebuilt. The buildings are single storey with an attic, including dormers. The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and a collar and tie-beam truss with two struts and a V-strut visible at the apex of the north gable end. The west front elevation features four ground floor three-light casement windows, two gabled dormers with two-light casement windows, and two 20th-century doors. The interior has not been inspected. There are 19th and 20th-century additions at the rear, and the roof covering was being renewed at the time of the survey in July 1985.
