Description
A pair of houses on High Street, built in the early 19th century and altered in the mid-20th century. The houses are constructed of brick with plain tiled roofs and end stacks. They are three storeys high and have a dentilled eaves cornice. The front has two bays on the left and two bays on the right. The windows have moulded architraves. The ground and first floor windows are twelve-pane sashes with cambered heads, while the second-floor windows are nine-pane sashes. The central entrance to No. 46 retains its open pediment supported by fluted consoles, with a raised and fielded six-panelled door and a traceried fanlight. The central entrance to No. 44 is a 20th-century replica of the original doorcase and is now blocked. A more recent entrance, with a cambered head and a 20th-century six-panelled door, is located in an adjoining wall. A Norwich Union fire insurance mark is visible between the first-floor windows of both houses.
Inside, original ceiling mouldings and woodwork remain. At the rear, open well staircases rise to the second floor, featuring slender columnar newels and moulded handrails. Full-height hipped rear wings accommodate the staircases and contain long, round-headed multi-paned stair lights.
