Description

The Old House and quadrant walls are a house and adjoining walls located on the east side of High Street in Redditch, dating from the early 19th century. The structure is built of brick and features a shallow hipped plain tiled roof. It stands three storeys tall with an attic, and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The facade consists of three bays, with the central bay set within a recessed round-headed arched panel. The windows have rusticated flat heads with raised keyblocks and moulded architraves. The ground floor windows are tripartite with a central 12-pane sash, while the first floor has three 12-pane sashes, and the second floor features three 6-pane sashes, the central one having a cambered head. The central entrance is accentuated by a distyle portico with fluted columns, and the entablature is decorated with rosettes, paterae, and a central urn relief. The entrance door is a six-panelled design with a moulded architrave and a traceried fanlight. The interior has not been inspected. At the rear, there are large stacks at the junction of the rear wings.

The quadrant walls are made of brick with a sandstone coping, standing about 12 feet high and stepping down to about eight feet where they face the street. The left wall includes a rectangular light with a 4-pane sash inserted, while the right wall has an inserted doorway. Both walls end in octagonal piers with sandstone cappings and large ball finials. The right wall features a south return approximately 12 yards long, terminating in a square pier with bullnosed corners, also capped with sandstone and topped with a ball finial. The building adjacent to the left wall at the rear is not of special architectural interest.
