Description

These are two cottages located on the south side of The Square in Redditch. They date back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The cottages are timber-framed with brick infill, although the front wall has been largely rebuilt in brick. A dentilled eaves-course is visible. The roofs are covered in Welsh slate and reproduction slate, with plain tiles to the rear of number 1. Brick ridge and rear lateral stacks are present.

Each cottage has a 2-unit plan and two storeys, with a 2-window range of 2-light 19th-century casement windows. Number 1 has a full-width plain-tile pentice over a canted bay window, a 6-panel door, and a projection to the right with a 3-light 19th-century casement. Number 3 features a 6-panel door with a doorcase and cornice hood, alongside a 3-light 19th-century casement on either side. The windows have cambered lintels.

The interiors include winder stairs, timber-framed partitions, and queen-post tie-beam trusses with ridge pieces. The front of number 1 was raised a storey in the early 20th century, at which point the original purlins were re-used. 19th-century extensions are present to the rear.
