Description

This building is a barn and attached stable block located about 30 yards north of Upper Berrow Farmhouse. It dates from the 17th century and 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. The structure is timber-framed on a brick plinth and is weatherboarded with a plain tiled roof. It features five framed bays oriented east to west, with wagon bays that have opposed cart entries and double doors in the second and fifth bays from the west end.

The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces across the lower corners. At the west end, there is a collar and tie-beam truss with two long struts and lower raking struts. The east end and the adjacent two trusses are of a truncated collar and tie-beam type with raking struts, along with two intermediate tie-beam trusses that also have raking struts. The roof has two tiers of trenched purlins.

The stable block is attached to the south side of the west end bay and dates from the 18th century. It is timber-framed with brick infill and some replacement walling, along with some weatherboarding and a plain tiled roof. This single-storey stable block has five bays, with large rectangular panels from the sill to the wall-plate and no visible trusses externally. The east elevation features five 2-light windows and five doors, while the south gable end displays diaper ventilation patterns. Inside, the stable block mainly has tie-beam trusses with raking struts.
