Description

This is an aisled barn and stable block, dating back to the 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th century. The barn is timber-framed and has weatherboard cladding, with some areas of wattle and brick infill panels. The stable block is also timber-framed, with brick detailing. The barn originally comprised five bays, with an aisle on the north side. It features a central wagon bay, with opposed square-headed cart entries (now blocked on the south side), and a midstrey on the north side. In the 19th century, the barn was extended to the west by three further bays, again with a central wagon bay and an outshut on the south side, extending along two bays of the original barn. The interior of the original five-bay section has end nave trusses, intermediate raking struts, and single, trenched purlins. The walls feature distinctive rectangular panels with bracing: short, straight braces in the lower corners of the upper row of panels on the south side, and long, straight braces in the lower corners of the north arcade frame. The aisle on either side of the midstrey has swept and chamfered braces from the aisle wall-post to the arcade-post. The later three-bay section has end queen strut trusses, two intermediate king-post trusses, and single, trenched purlins, along with panels and bracing similar to the earlier section. The stable block is a range of four bays, featuring four stable doors and two openings with wooden shutters, along with a hayloft door, all on the south side. The stable block's interior has queen strut trusses and trenched purlins. There are square panels from sill to wall-plate on the south side, with fewer panels on the north side where the roof slopes to a lower level. The block is floored throughout, except for the bay adjoining the barn. To the east gable end is a single-storey, two-bay wing with a hipped roof and south gable, with one bay open for covered wagon access. The roof construction of this wing features raking strut trusses and trenched purlins.
